Spectrum Health named one of 2021's best companies for multicultural women

Spectrum Health was named one of the best companies for multicultural women in 2021, in a new report from Seramount. The health care system is one of three Michigan-based organizations to make the list.

Seramount researchers say multicultural women make up 25% of the workforce, and 50% of them are thinking about leaving their roles within the next two years. The company’s latest list, compiling 2021’s best companies for multicultural women was a way to support this unique talent, giving a guide to areas that are showing progress in diversity, equity and inclusion, particularly in top positions.

Between 2019 and 2020, the Spectrum Health increased their women employees from multicultural backgrounds by more than 12 percent. The number of senior managers in the same category raised by 15%, with more Black, Latinx and Asian women being promoted.

“Diversity, equity and inclusion are essential to improving care and reducing health inequities, so no one gets left behind, and that’s at the heart of Spectrum Health’s mission, vision and values,” said Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer Pam Ries. “To be honored as one of the best companies for multicultural women is particularly rewarding because the vast majority of health care workers are women.”

While Spectrum Health was the only health care system in the state to make the list, other Michigan-based companies like General Motors and Whirlpool Corporation were also honored.

Seramount awarded dozens of companies across the nation, with 75% of them having anti-racist training, 89% having programs to address racist trauma and 95% holding management accountable for diversity, equity and inclusion results. 

While the group says numbers show a step in the right direction, they're advocating for more work to continue.
