Michigan's 2nd death this year from West Nile Virus confirmed

According to the Kent County Health Department, the West Nile Virus has claimed a second life this season, while eight total cases of the West Nile Virus have been confirmed statewide.

Brian Hartl is the Epidemiology Supervisor at Kent County Health Department. He says he expects that number to grow.

“We will likely see some," Hartl said. "We are actually working with the state to confirm a few additional cases as well, so at least a few more to come in the next couple of weeks.”

According to health officials, only 20 percent of those infected by the West Nile Virus will experience any type of symptoms, which typically include a fever, body aches and fatigue. Meanwhile one percent will develop neuro-invasive disease where the virus attacks the central nervous system.

“So that is when actually get concerned," Hartl said. "Where you’ve got extreme headaches, tingling in your fingers, confusion and things like that. That is when someone should see a doctor.”

Recent testing by the Kent County Health Department found that the number of Culex Mosquitos carrying the virus the year had increased this year by 400%. Residents however, shouldn’t panic.

“There is not a need to be nervous,” Hartl said. “We just want to make sure that people are aware that they are out there, and are prepared to protect themselves.”

Ways to protect oneself include using repellent that contains DEET, draining any standing water around one’s home, avoiding wearing black clothing, and avoid outside activities at dawn and dusk.
