Authorities say a Michigan State Police trooper was seriously injured after his vehicle was struck from behind while stopped along a Detroit-area freeway.

Police say eastbound Interstate 696 was closed Monday morning following the crash near the Lodge Freeway in Southfield.

According to police, the trooper was at the scene of an earlier crash compiling a report when his vehicle was struck.

Police say the trooper was conscious when taken to the hospital with broken ribs and injuries to his head.

The freeway reopened later Monday morning.

Police want motorists to use caution near stopped emergency vehicles.

Last week, state police helped launch a traffic safety effort reminding motorists of state law requiring them to move over for police and fire vehicles as well as ambulances and tow trucks.
