A 31-year-old man who told sheriff's deputies he was tied for 36 hours to a tree at a western Michigan campground has been charged with making a false police report.

MLive.com reports  Tuesday that Mecosta County authorities found no evidence that Jonathan Cross was accosted March 21 at Haymarsh State Game Area Campground in Grant Township, northeast of Grand Rapids.

Doctors also found no signs of injury consistent with Cross's story.

The newspaper reports that surveillance video from an area store shows Cross buying rope at the time he was alleged to have been tied to the tree.

Cross is from Pierson. He was arraigned Monday and was being held on a $75,000 bond.
